About

With UDesign Academy, children and teens learn design and architecture skills in an applied setting. They bring their unique frame of reference to a real public space in the city they live in. Through hands-on activities, they explore the built environment and learn about the many layers of urban planning and design that serve the citizens of their city.

In our courses, students create proposals to make real public spaces more inclusive, sustainable, and safe, then present them to the public. They practice site analysis, technical drawing, model-making, and prototyping. The process builds their critical and empathetic thinking, teamwork, and public speaking, while showing them that young people can have a role in shaping their city.

The process builds their critical and empathetic thinking, teamwork, and public speaking, while showing them that young people can have a role in shaping their city.

Over the long term, our courses help communities build these skills for themselves, bringing young people into the practice of placemaking. For cities and designers reshaping public space, that means residents who understand the process and can contribute to it meaningfully. We believe that by teaching young people how public spaces are made, we prepare whole communities to understand, question, and help shape the designs proposed for them.

Our Story

We launched UDesign Academy in March 2022 with design workshops for Ukrainian children displaced by Russia’s full-scale war. What began as a space for creative expression quickly evolved into something more: a platform for learning, resilience, and connection. We saw firsthand how design could help children make sense of their new environment, giving them a voice in shaping the world around them.

Why Us

Every student finishes with something they've built and the experience of working the way designers do, on a real site. Here's what they take away:

Skills for Life

Design skillsReading and making technical drawings, working to scale, and developing ideas through collages, models, and prototypes
Thinking like a plannerAnalyzing sites and their users, weighing stakeholders and budgets, and designing with sustainability and climate resilience in mind
Critical and empathetic thinkingUnderstanding a space and the people who use it, and solving problems with both in mind
CommunicationPitching ideas, giving and receiving feedback, and presenting to the public

Learning from the Experts

Professional instructorsOur instructors are young professionals and students in urban planning and architecture who bring their expertise into every class.
Local partnersWe partner with local organizations to show students the many ways people take an active role in their communities, from visiting an urban farm to touring the city to learn about the lives of people experiencing homelessness
Career explorationStudents work through the same process planners and designers use, from analyzing a site to presenting a proposal, giving them a hands-on sense of these careers and whether they might pursue them

Designing An Urban Oasis

Designing An Urban Oasis poster

Designing An Urban Oasis asks students what their community needs, and how urban planning and design can provide it. Starting from Karlín's history and urban form, they learn about users, climate resilience, and nature in the city, using real-world case studies. They build critical thinking and design techniques like site analysis, model-making, and prototyping. Finally, they design an installation for CAMP and present it, advocating for how their oasis meets the community's needs.

Building An Urban Oasis

In Building An Urban Oasis, students learn what it takes to bring a design to life. Teams develop furniture concepts for CAMP and refine them through technical drawings, scale models, and full-size prototypes, learning from experts along the way. Working with real materials, they gain hands-on fabrication and teamwork skills as their ideas take physical form. The course ends with an exhibition where each team presents its finished piece to the community.

Our Team

Our program is led by young professionals and students in architecture and urban planning. They're close enough in age and experience to be relatable, so students quickly build trust and rapport with them. Each group has three to four instructors, which means every student gets individual attention and a real chance to be heard.
